2020 / 2021 Opera Season
Our Biggest Season Ever!
Pacific Opera Victoria launches the second season of our 40th anniversary celebration with a lineup that surpasses in scope and variety anything we’ve done before.
Die Walküre by Richard Wagner
October 15, 18, 21, 24, 2020
The second opera in Richard Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle, Die Walküre is hardcore opera – transcendent, stunning. Drawn from the world of myth, it is the saga of a family bent on destroying itself, and of Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie who stands up to her father, the god Wotan, and chooses the power of love over the rule of law. This is cosmic drama, with music that is absolutely ravishing!
Death in Venice by Benjamin Britten
February 11, 13, 19, 21, 2021
Benjamin Britten’s final opera, Death in Venice is a haunting meditation on art, beauty, and mortality, blending opera, dance, and a strikingly diverse musical palette. A burnt-out, middle-aged writer travels to Venice to recapture his creativity. As cholera threatens the city, he falls under the thrall of a beautiful boy and loses himself in an abyss of loneliness and desire.
Atom Egoyan returns to Victoria to direct this subtle and brilliantly theatrical work.
Don Giovanni by W. A. Mozart
April 8, 10, 14, 16, 18, 2021
Don Giovanni is 230-year-old proof that #MeToo is nothing new and that opera can be both dazzling and relevant to our time. The libertine with a catalogue of conquests has been around forever, and women have long been speaking up and demanding justice. An arresting mix of comedy, melodrama, and tragedy, with music as sublime and seductive as anything Mozart ever wrote, Don Giovanni has quite rightly been called the opera of all operas.

Los Elementos by Antonio de Literes
November 7 and 8, 2020
This gorgeous, flamenco-infused Spanish Baroque opera makes its Canadian première in a presentation by the acclaimed Barcelona-based early music ensemble Le Tendre Amour. The four medieval elements (air, earth, fire, water) are portrayed by four sopranos in dazzling flamenco dresses, who meet in a Spanish bar in the 1950s. Created by Antonio de Literes, widely regarded as the greatest Spanish composer of his era, Los Elementos is a revelation, fusing the elegance of Baroque opera with the vibrancy of Spanish rhythm and dance.
Co-presented by Pacific Opera and the Early Music Society of the Islands
