The Challenges and Opportunities of Digital Performance
The shift to digital performance plunged the world of opera into new waters over the past two years, challenging what’s possible in the art form. Join the Civic Engagement Quartet as they chat with the Greater Victoria Public Library about not only what they have struggled with throughout this process, but also about how they have crossed barriers and merged new forms of creativity to enrich and enhance the reality of what opera is today.
Gender and Sexual Identity in Opera
The aspiration to be true to oneself when storytelling, even while playing a character, is something that the Civic Engagement Quartet shares with many artists, but the tropes associated with voice types in opera can often interfere with this authenticity. Enjoy as they share with the Greater Victoria Public Library how we can break through those stereotypes to tell stories that truly resonate with artists and audiences.
Working with Indie Opera Companies
Different size companies bring differing ranges of experiences to the table for singers – large opera houses have collaboration with a large team of creatives and a scope of possibility that can’t be rivalled, but indie companies allow for more experimentation with niche audiences, bringing forth creativity that isn’t always present for singers with larger opera houses. Learn about the similarities, the differences, the ups, and the downs with the Civic Engagement Quartet as they chat with the Greater Victoria Library! Their dream: to get to work for both, in order to experience all that opera has to offer, in all of its forms and sizes.
What’s New in the World of Opera
As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, the world of opera is shifting, and it’s doing so in a positive direction. Join the Civic Engagement Quartet as they talk with the Greater Victoria Library about how the creation of more indie companies is allowing opera to come into new spaces and blend itself with different genres in a way we haven’t seen before, how larger companies are creating community outreach programs to bring opera to places it hasn’t been before, and the shift to investing in new works that tell stories that relate to the people of today.
