Sit down with Rebecca Hass, Timothy Vernon, and special guest Michael Shamata, Belfry Theatre’s Artistic Director, to hear what life as an Artistic Director is like. Touching on personal inspiration, the importance of creating relevant work, and the constant desire to take part in all productions, they pull back the curtain to share their lives with us.

Being an artistic Director is a lifelong learning process and Timothy and Michael have devoted themselves to just that. Constantly pushing themselves to learn about and represent the world in a way that matches their vision is not an easy task, but it is a rewarding one, and there is nothing either of them would rather be doing.

Michael Shamata is the Artistic Director of the Belfry Theatre. An award-winning director, he has created productions at Canada’s major theatres and directed the world premiere of Mary’s Wedding with Pacific Opera Victoria. Also a writer, his adaptation and production of A Christmas Carol at Soulpepper is a Toronto tradition.

As a fitting opening to the series, they start at the beginning of Timothy’s career as a conductor, reflecting on five teachers and mentors that were essential in his journey to becoming a conductor and a creative director.

From Victoria to Vienna to all across Europe, Timothy’s time spent learning about music was an adventure with many ups and downs, including a brief foray into composing! Reminiscing about those who made him into who he is today, Timothy takes us along for the journey and reveals what it’s really like to be taught by famous conductors.
