Distinguished academic and scholar and a passionate patron of the arts, David was a financial supporter and dedicated volunteer with numerous arts organizations including Pacific Opera Victoria. David joined the Board in 2008 and served as President (2010 – 2014). He went on to chair the Pacific Opera Victoria Foundation (2017 – 2022). As a testament to his philanthropic leadership, on National Philanthropy Day in 2012, the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Vancouver Island honored David with a “Generosity of Spirit Award” in recognition of his outstanding commitment to philanthropy. In 2015 Royal Roads University honored Flaherty with the Chancellor’s Community Recognition Award and in 2017 the University of Victoria conferred upon him the degree of Honorary Doctor of Laws.
