Jan Van der Hooft’s 2019/20 season included his debut with Pacific Opera Victoria in three productions: Il trittico, Missing, and The Flight of the Hummingbird. Jan sang the roles of the Song Vendor in Il tabarro and Spinelloccio in Gianni Schicchi, both part of the company’s production of Puccini’s Il trittico.  He performed the role of Devon in the remount of Missing in Victoria, Regina, and Prince George. Finally, as Bear and Crow 2 in the world première production and BC school tour of The Flight of the Hummingbird, Jan also made his company debut with Vancouver Opera.

Jan returns to Pacific Opera for summer 2020 as one of the team of singers presenting Pop Up Opera in locations throughout the Capital Region.

Other recent highlights include Christmas in Bohemia with the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra, and Messiah with  the Victoria Civic Orchestra. Jan was recently also featured with his fiancée Anna Shill, as part of Opera Nuova’s ‘Coast to Coast Concert series’, broadcast earlier this June. He and Anna now live, work and teach in Victoria.

Jan was raised in Winnipeg which is located within Treaty No 1 Territory, the traditional lands of the Anishinabe, Ininew, Oji-Cree, Dene and Dakota and is the birthplace of the Métis Nation.

The Canadian tenor is an alumnus of the Emerging Artist Program at Calgary Opera, where his credits included his mainstage debut as Tybalt in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and the role of The Nephew in the world première of Veronika Krausas’ critically acclaimed new work, Ghost Opera.
