As the lead hand in the properties department Karina Kalvaitis helps to create, alter, and source all manner of objects to meet the designers’ briefs. The sky’s the limit for the materials, techniques and tools that the props department uses to ensure that each prop has the right look and performs as it needs to on stage.

A graduate of the Alberta University of the Arts (majoring in sculpture) Karina has a lifelong interest in all sorts of art-making techniques and materials. Her career making props is an extension of her love for hands-on creative projects.

Karina has been the properties instructor at the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre, and a guest scenic artist on many productions.

In addition to her role at Pacific Opera Victoria, she is also a sculptor specializing in odd yet personable imaginary animal sculptures that are made in limited edition litters.
