Born in Argentina, with both Argentinian and Spanish nationality, tenor Marcelo Puente has per-formed in theaters around the world including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opéra na-tional de Paris, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Colón of Bue-nos Aires, Sydney Opera Australia, Teatro Real in Madrid, Staatsoper Hamburg, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Semperoper Dresden, Canadian Opera Company, Wash-ington National Opera, the State Opera in Prague, Vancouver Opera, Greek National Opera and several others.
Season 2026/2027 will see him as, among others, Cavaradossi in Tosca at Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa in Warsaw, Otello in the title role at Calgary Opera, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly at Greek National Opera. In the past season he was Radamès in Aida at Theater St. Gallen, Don José in Carmen at Teatro Municipal de Lima, Paolo in Francesca da Rimini at Teatro Regio in Torino, Cavaradossi in Tosca at Greek National Opera. Roles in preparation for the future include Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West, Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, Enzo in La Gioconda and many others on the Spinto Dramatic repertoire.
Recent highlights of his career include returning successfully to Covent Garden as Cavaradossi in Tosca and singing the same role at Theater Bonn Opernhaus, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Staats-oper Hamburg and San Diego Opera. During the past few seasons he has been Don Alvaro in La forza del Destino at Greek National Opera, Radamés in Aida at Teatro Colón, Prince Calaf in Tu-randot at Teatro Colón and in Taormina, Italy, in a production signed by Maestro Giancarlo Del Monaco, Turridu in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana at Staatsoper Hamburg. He has returned to Toronto with Canadian opera Company as Don José in Carmen, and has reprised the same role in Jerez, Spain.
Puente sprang to international attention in 2017 when he debuted at the Royal Opera House as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly opposite Ermonela Jaho and conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano. This production was also released on DVD. Other debuts followed in rapid succession: at Staatsoper Hamburg and Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie as Pinkerton, as Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Canadian Opera Company, as Don José with Opera Australia.
He then sang Paolo in Francesca da Rimini at Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg in 2018 and subse-quently starred in the same role for his debut at Teatro alla Scala in April/ May 2018. He also added the role of Don Álvaro in La Forza del Destino to his repertoire in a new production at Opernhaus Zürich, as well as at Semperoper Dresden, and sang his first Calaf in Turandot for his debut at the Vancouver Opera.
In 2019, Puente debuted at the Opéra national de Paris as Cavaradossi singing 10 performances replacing Jonas Kaufman. He returned to Dresden as Don José in Carmen and made his debut at Cologne Opera in La Forza del Destino. He also sang Cavaradossi at Staatsoper Hamburg and began the 2019/20 season with his debut at Teatro Real in Madrid in the title role of Verdi’s Don Carlos, 5 act version in Italian after which he reprised the role for his debut at the Greek National Opera in Athens. He also made his role debut as Gounod’s Faust at Washington National Opera in a production by Francesca Zambello, as well as his first Pollione in a new production of Norma at Staatsoper Hamburg. Other engagements included Don José at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Manrico in Il Trovatore with Opera Toulon and Don José with Charles Dutoit at NHK Symphony Orchestra.
Puente made his debut at the Opéra de Marseille as Cavaradossi in Tosca and began the 2021/22 season with his return to Dresden as Pollione in Norma, after which he appeared as Pinkerton for his debut at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia. He debuted the title role of Andrea Chenier in the same season at the Greek National Opera and re-turned to Marseille in the title role of Don Carlo.
