The Wingate Studio is a state-of-the-art, 2,500 sq. ft. acoustically engineered venue in downtown Victoria. Accessible, and available for rentals for rehearsal, recording, and performance space in Pacific Opera Victoria’s community,  

The Mezzanine is a meeting room supplied with tables that seat up to 20 comfortably. Laptop and OWL system available to use and compatible with Zoom and Teams. Private single stall washroom available. Wheelchair accessible.

Overview 

The Studio Access Program offers subsidized and accessible rehearsal and recording space in Pacific Opera Victoria’s state-of-the-art, 2,500 sq. ft. acoustically engineered venue at the Baumann Centre in downtown Victoria. This initiative is designed to support artists and ensembles, by promoting subsidized access to professional music-making facilities. 

Benefits 

Cost Savings: Enjoy a 50% discount on studio fees. 

$25 per hour, $125 per day, $500 per week. 

Rates include an event staff member for after-hours bookings if required. 

Increased Access: Gain essential rehearsal and recording time in a professional setting tailored for musicians and voice. 

Long-Term Opportunities: Participants may have the chance to transition into long-term venue partnerships, granting ongoing access to the Wingate Studio. 

Program Duration: Applicants will enjoy subsidized access to the studio between January 1, 2025 and September 30, 2025. 

Application Process 

Eligibility: Independent artists and artist ensembles working in music and the performing arts are encouraged to apply by making a booking request below. All booking requests will be assessed for eligibility. Special consideration will be given to Indigenous and equity-seeking artists.  

Ineligible: Commercial activities are not eligible for subsidized rates (including paid teaching, coaching, classes or performances). 

How to Apply: To apply for the Studio Access Program, please fill out the online registration form below. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and all booking requests that are submitted will be assessed for eligibility.

Mezzanine Rates

A grand piano sits central on the floor of the Wingate Studio, light streaming in from five large windows behind it. The sculpture Mind, Body and Soul is on the roof.

The Opera Shop Facility Rentals

Scene Shop, Wardrobe & Prop Shop rentals 

The Opera Shop’s 10,000 square foot warehouse is available for film, television and event production. The Scene Shop is designed for construction work in steel, wood and scenic painting and boasts a clear height of 20 feet, level loading facilities, compressed air and ample utilities. The wardrobe and prop shops are generous spaces with natural light, laundry facilities and fitting rooms. The Opera Shop has secure parking, office space, lunch room, and wireless internet service and is centrally located in Victoria’s downtown warehouse district. 

Pacific Opera Victoria maintains professional affiliations with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE Local 168), Associated Designers of Canada, Canadian Institute of Theatre Technology and WorkSafeBC.  

Pacific Opera Victoria’s eclectic team of artists and craftspeople can bring a wealth of creative and technical expertise to your project in the fields of project management, design, construction, scenic art, properties and wardrobe construction. The team brings a wealth of experience in opera, theatre, film, and television production. 

Non-profit community groups are welcome use their volunteer labour in our shops under the guidance of our shop team.
