Pacific Opera Victoria proudly presents the Luminary Series, a new showcase of exceptional artists bringing notable projects to McPherson Playhouse for one-night-only events.

The inaugural concert on December 2nd features world-class soprano Barbara Hannigan and pianist Bertrand Chamayou, with special guest appearances by Terrence Tam (Principal Violin of Victoria Symphony) and Benjamin Butterfield (Head of Voice, UVic School of Music).

Enjoy a captivating program with works by Messiaen, Scriabin, and John Zorn, as the Luminary Series promises unforgettable performances from classical music’s finest.

In addition to this concert, Barbara Hannigan and Bertrand Chamayou are offering a public lecture and masterclass at UVic School of Music.

Barbara Hannigan (Full Bio)

Grammy and Juno-winning Canadian musician Barbara Hannigan is celebrated for her profound commitment to contemporary music, premiering nearly 100 new works. Over 30 years, she has collaborated with world-class artists globally as a soprano and conductor. Winner of multiple international awards, she will become Chief Conductor of Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 2026 and holds key roles with several organizations. Barbara resides on France’s coast, with roots in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Bertrand Chamayou (Full Bio)

Bertrand Chamayou is a celebrated pianist known for his virtuosic, imaginative performances. An expert in French repertoire, he has tackled works by Ravel, Liszt, and Messiaen while also collaborating with composers like Boulez and Adès. Chamayou performs globally with top orchestras and partners like Barbara Hannigan and Sol Gabetta. His recordings, including award-winning albums of Saint-Saëns and Ravel, have earned wide acclaim. Since 2021, he’s been the co-Artistic Director of France’s Festival Ravel.

Benjamin Butterfield (Full Bio)

Internationally acclaimed Canadian tenor Benjamin Butterfield has had a long and celebrated association with Pacific Opera Victoria, where he debuted in 1990. His local contributions include multiple operatic roles and, more recently, recitals with pianist Kinza Tyrrell in the Lunchbox Opera Online series. A Halifax-born, Victoria-raised artist, Butterfield studied at the University of Victoria and now heads voice studies there. He regularly performs with Victoria’s top ensembles and is a prolific recording artist and Royal Society of Canada fellow.

Terence Tam (Full Bio)

Renowned for his musicality and technique, Canadian violinist Terence Tam has performed across Canada, the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Japan. Currently concertmaster of the Victoria Symphony, he previously held the role with Adelaide Symphony and Symphony Nova Scotia. A sought-after chamber musician, he’s appeared at numerous festivals, including Ravinia, Aspen, and Banff. Tam trained at the Glenn Gould School and Peabody Institute and was recently honored with an FRCMT by Canada’s Royal Conservatory of Music..
