Pacific Opera Victoria’s production of Tosca includes loud theatrical effects (including cannon blasts and gunfire) and haze, as well as depictions of physical violence (including torture, attempted assault, and suicide).
One of Puccini’s best-known operas, Tosca is a roller coaster story of love, lust, murder and political intrigue. This new co-production with Vancouver Opera will centre on the idea of truth: truth as told to us by political and religious leaders, truths expressed to us through the eyes of the artists. In a world where the very idea of truth is negotiated how do we know to trust ourselves and stay true to our own truth? Set in Rome in the 1800s this production stays true to the original setting creating that “Grand Opera” experience, with gowns and cannon fire and pipe organs, while using projections enabling us to change our perspective of the piece and allowing moments of complex realism contrasting with the surreal. With Puccini‘s richly romantic score, it is one of the composer’s finest works. Directed by Brenna Corner with Brett Polegato as Scarpia.
Step into a world of passion, politics, and betrayal with Puccini’s Tosca, a breathtaking opera where love burns bright against the dark tides of tyranny. Set amidst political upheaval and war, Tosca is the story of Floria Tosca, a fiery and devoted singer caught in a deadly triangle between her beloved, the revolutionary artist Mario Cavaradossi, and the corrupt, sadistic chief of police, Baron Scarpia.
From its first thunderous chords to its devastating finale, Tosca hurtles forward with unrelenting drama. Puccini’s masterful score pulses with raw emotion, from Tosca’s aching plea “Vissi d’arte” to Cavaradossi’s final love song. Each note is infused with longing, desperation, and defiance as Tosca navigates a brutal game of power and sacrifice, where even her voice – the thing she holds most sacred – becomes a weapon.
More than a tale of doomed love, Tosca is a searing portrait of resistance in the face of oppression, where art and faith are tested against cruelty and injustice. It is opera at its most visceral—intimate yet grand, deeply human and tragically heroic. In Tosca, the personal becomes political, and every choice cuts deep. You won’t just watch it; you’ll feel it in your bones.
